I never really explicitly stated SJ's bond with Sonic. At a young age (specifically 4-14) he was traumatised into believing that he was born for Sonic's ego gain, thus making him run off and turn to asses like Scourge.
After being redeemed, he had a truce and a small rekindling bond with Sonic. Aiding him in the final battle, leading to SJ's death. Regretting his actions and wanting to know about his family.
SJ dies canonically after turning super by a hyper laser blasting through him. I may draw that later on in life. I don't know how old to make SJ when he dies but eh, that's for another day.
